Introduction

Wonder Girls was a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment, they debuted in February 2007 with the single “Irony” with original lineup consisting of Yeeun, Sunye, Sunmi, Hyuna, and Sohee. Following Hyuna’s departure in July 2007 due to chronic gastroenteritis and recurring fainting spells, Yubin was added to the group just prior to the release of their debut studio album, “The Wonder Years”. The album produced the hit single “Tell Me”, which topped various South Korean music charts and earned the group their first music show win.

On September 22, 2008, Wonder Girls released the single “Nobody” and performed it the following weekend on Show! Music Core, Music Bank, and Inkigayo. The song quickly climbed to No. 1 on Music Bank, where it stayed for four consecutive weeks. It also won Cyworld’s “Song of the Month” award for both September and October 2008.

At the 2008 Mnet KM Music Festival, the group received three major awards: Song of the Year, Best Music Video for “Nobody,” and Best Female Group. They also took home a digital sales award at the 2008 Golden Disk Awards. At the 18th Seoul Music Awards, Wonder Girls received the Daesang (Artist of the Year)—the highest honor of the night—for “Nobody”.

In March 2009, the group announced plans to pursue an English-language music career in the United States, beginning with the official release of an English version of “Nobody” in the summer of 2009.

Wonder Girls made international history by becoming the first Korean act to enter the Billboard Hot 100, with the English version of “Nobody” debuting at No. 76 on the chart dated October 16, 2009.

In June 2009, JYP Entertainment announced that Wonder Girls would join the Jonas Brothers on the North American leg of their World Tour 2009.

Sunmi left the group in 2010 to pursue academics. Hyerim, a JYP trainee, became her replacement.

In 2013, JYP announced that the group would go on hiatus. Wonder Girls gave their final performance before the hiatus at the Winter Special Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, on February 5, 2013.

JYP Entertainment announced that Wonder Girls would be making a comeback after a three-year hiatus on June 24, 2015. After being inactive since early 2013, Sunye officially announced her departure from the group in July 2015. A representative from the agency confirmed that former member Sunmi would rejoin the group for the first time since her withdrawal in 2010. The group released the album “Reboot” on August 3.

On January 26, 2017, JYP Entertainment announced that Wonder Girls were disbanding, with only Yubin and Hyerim renewing their contracts, while Yeeun and Sunmi chose to leave the company.

As a celebration of their 10th anniversary since debut, the group released their final single, “Draw Me” on February 10, 2017.
